Where to Get Custom Converse in Japan
If you want a pair, you’ll need to go to White Atelier by Converse, not any Converse store in Tokyo. This is Converse Japan’s official customization studio, and it’s the only place where you can create custom Converse sneakers in person.
There are currently two physical locations:
Harajuku, Tokyo: About an 11-minute walk from Harajuku Station or 8 minutes from Meiji-Jingumae Station. It’s on a quieter street, and it’s very walkable from other popular Harajuku stops.
Fukuoka: There’s a second White Atelier in Kyushu. You can find the exact location on the Converse Japan store locator.
There’s also an online option, but it only ships domestically in Japan. So if you’re visiting, the in-store experience is the way to go, and to be honest, the in-person browsing part is half the fun.
About White Atelier by Converse
White Atelier by Converse is not just the regular Converse store. It’s a dedicated customization studio where you start with a all-white pair of Chuck Taylors and make them your own.
They focus exclusively on classic white high-tops and low-tops, so you have the space to build your design. You can repaint the shoe, add everything from cute animals, to lettering, seasonal graphics, and even limited edition artwork.
They also offer wedding shoe customization: basically, a more romantic take on the usual service. Think anniversary dates on the side, initials near the laces, or a soft redesign of the All Star logo just for the occasion. These are only available on high-tops and can be a thoughtful add-on for special trips or gifts.

How to Customize Converse Shoes at White Atelier (Step-by-step)
The process is super straightforward, and the staff will guide you through each step. Here’s exactly what to expect when you go in.
1. Pick Your Base Model
Head to the customization counter and let the staff know you want a pair of custom shoes. You’ll choose between high-top or low-top Chuck Taylors, both in bright white. You want to try them on to make sure the size fits, because the fit can feel different depending on the cut.

2. Browse the Design Binder
You’ll be handed a binder and cloth samples of all the available designs. It’s got a good selection, from cute things and seasonal art to typography and limited edition artist collabs. It’s just fun to flip through even if you don’t know exactly what you want yet.
Remember, there are also limited edition designs that can’t be mixed with your own creations, so choose wisely!

3. Choose Your Custom Elements
You can pick from design categories like Standard, Typography, Sticker, Name, or Artist. You can mix and match different elements as long as they’re compatible, but limited edition styles usually have to be used solo. Ask the staff to confirm which designs can be combined.
4. Add Personal Touches
This is your chance to get creative and stand out. You can add charms or different laces to make your shoes feel even more like you. They also offer optional gift wrapping if you’re creating them for someone else.
5. Confirm and Place Your Order
Once you’re happy with your design choices, the staff will confirm your design selections, fit, and extras. They will then let you know when the shoes will be ready. Usually, it’s a same-day pickup, but if you’re too close to closing time, it might be ready the next day.

How Much Does It Cost to Make a Pair of Converse?
Regular adult shoes start at ¥8,250, but the final price depends on the model and design extras you choose.
Here’s the current breakdown:
- All Star HI and All Star OX Base Price: ¥8,250
- Child All Star HI: ¥4,950
- Baby All Star: ¥4,730
- Limited Edition All Star HI: ¥12,650
- Additional Designs and Extras: ¥4,000 to ¥7,000
These prices cover the base model and standard customization. If you choose more intricate or special add-ons, of course the final cost will increase. It’s smart to set a budget before you start designing so you can enjoy the process without overspending.
Our Experience Customizing Converse Shoes
This was one of those things we debated whether we wanted every single time we passed the store. We finally pulled the trigger.
I picked the classic high-top All Star model, looked like a better option to go with my jeans. Because I kinda want a cat design on everything I can choose, I went with a small cat graphic and added the word “Breathe” on the side (personal motto). The design just shouts Dana.
The process was super smooth. The staff helped us confirm sizes, walked through all the design steps, and made sure everything looked right before sending to production.
After we hung around other spots in Harajuku for a couple hours, the shoes were ready. Comfy and fun, so glad I got them!

Tips for a Smoother Experience
Designing your own Converse is simple, but a few here are some tips to make your experience even better:
- Bring Your Passport: If you’re a tourist, you might qualify for tax-free shopping. Don’t forget to bring your passport, especially if you’re customizing more than one pair or adding extras. It adds up fast.
- Plan Ahead: Try to get in earlier in the day. That way, you’ll avoid long waits and can still pick up your shoes same day. If you miss the cut-off time, they might need until the next day to finish your pair.
- Know the Limited Edition Rules: Limited edition designs are beautiful, but they come with a catch: you usually can’t combine them with any other custom elements. If you want a limited design, then that becomes your full customization.
- Just Be a Decent Person: If the store is crowded when you visit, don’t hold up the line, be polite to the staff, and if you’re indecisive, step aside until you’re ready.

Q&A About Making Your Own Converse
Can You Put Custom Images on Converse?
No, you can’t upload and print your own photos onto the shoes. But you can add your own text (letters, numbers, short words), and choose from their design catalog, which includes cute graphics, symbols, and seasonal art.
If you want a wearable souvenir where you can actually upload your photo and make it truly your own, check out our customizing your shirt at Uniqlo guide.
How Long Does It Take to Customize My Own Converse?
Most of the time, your shoes will be ready in a few hours. If you visit early in the day, you’re more likely to get same-day pickup. But if the store’s busy or you miss the cutoff, it may take until the next day.
While you’re waiting, explore the area. There’s always something fun going on in Harajuku: wandering Takeshita Street or checking out Harakado’s new shops and rooftop views.

Can I Watch My Shoes Being Made?
You can, but you don’t have to. The Harajuku store moved the customization area to the second floor, so it’s not always visible from the main floor.
You can ask the staff if it’s possible to peek at the process, depends on whether it’s crowded that day. This may also vary by location.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a Japan souvenir that’s stylish, personal, and actually wearable, making your own Converse shoes is one of the best experiences. The process is simple, fun, and leaves you with a one-of-a-kind pair.
Just show up, get creative, and walk out with something no one else has.
