What is the Suica Penguin Hotel Room?
The Suica Penguin hotel room is officially called Suica Penguin Room ~Café Time~.
It’s exactly what it sounds like. A hotel room themed around the Suica Penguin in a chill setting like you are having afternoon tea time with it. If you’ve seen Japan’s IC card Suica, you’ve probably noticed its mascot. That round little penguin is so cute. And now, it has its own room.
Japan has all kinds of themed hotels. Hello Kitty, Snoopy, train-themed, you name it. This one is Suica Penguin all the way. Décor, details, and little surprises around the room all tie back to the mascot.
The room is inside Hotel Metropolitan Ikebukuro, a well-located hotel in one of Tokyo’s busiest neighborhoods. Ikebukuro is packed with food, anime stores, and arcades. Sunshine City is nearby, and there’s always something happening.
The hotel is super accessible and has an airport limo bus that stops right at the door. If you’re coming from Haneda or Narita, it’s an easy arrival.
And here’s the fun part. Only one group can book the Suica Penguin Room each night. One room, one stay per night. That’s it. The space is themed from top to bottom with décor, amenities, and even a few take-home gifts you can’t get anywhere else.
The hotel itself has good food options too. Japanese, Chinese, and French dining plus a dessert counter and some shopping floors. You could easily hang out here without leaving and still have a nice day exploring Tokyo.

What’s Inside the Suica Penguin Room
The second you walk in, it’s penguin everything. Plush toys, artwork, wall stickers, even the bed sheets feels themed.
There’s a giant Suica Penguin sitting in the room, it’s as soft as it looks. We may or may not have hugged it every time we walked past. Sadly you can’t bring the big one home.
You’ll also find a bookshelf full of guest diaries, some dating back to 2012. Past visitors have left drawings, notes, and stories about their stay. It’s a fun way to feel connected to other travelers who also fell in love with the room.
There’s a view of Ikebukuro Station from the window, which feels fitting for a room themed around a train card. And in the background, a tiny music box plays soft jazz and classical music, which somehow just works.
The whole space is cozy, calm, and full of little surprises that make it feel personal.

Exclusive Perks of the Suica Penguin Room
This room isn’t just cute. It comes with some fun extras.
First, the food. You get two Suica Penguin mousse cakes, which you can pick up from the dessert shop downstairs. They’re almost too cute to eat.
You’ll also get an in-room breakfast for two, complete with Suica-themed pancakes, eggs, salad, fruit, and yogurt. It’s a full spread, and one of the best hotel breakfasts we’ve had in Tokyo.
Next is the take-home gift. Each stay includes a Suica Penguin tea set with cups, plates, and utensils. If you want even more, you can also buy themed pajamas for 6,000 yen. They’re soft and cozy. My daily lounge wear at home now.
These little touches make the room feel like more than just a themed stay. It’s a full experience, from the food to the keepsakes.

This room books fast. Only one group can stay per night, and it’s capped at one night per guest. If you’re interested, plan ahead.

The starting price is 41,000 yen per night for two guests (a slight increased from the time we stayed). And it varies depending on the season and whether there’s a special event.
Right now, the hotel is running a 40th anniversary version of the Suica Penguin Room. The price is higher. Instead of take-home tea sets, you’ll get a set of custom wine glasses with the Suica Penguin etched into them.
You’ll still get the mousse cake voucher and the in-room breakfast. And there’s now an exclusive room service menu you can order from after check-in. The Suica Penguin Roast Beef and Camembert Cheeseburger sounds so good, available from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for an additional 3,000 yen.

Our Experience Staying at the Suica Penguin Room
Staying in the Suica Penguin Room was memorable from the second we walked in. The décor is adorable, the room is calm and nice, and every detail feels intentional. It’s one of those rooms that makes you smile without trying too hard.
The in-room breakfast was easily one of our favorite hotel breakfasts in Tokyo. It wasn’t just good, it was actually fun. Pancakes with Suica Penguin faces, a fresh mix of fruit, salad, eggs, yogurt, and more. Everything arrived on time, and it looked just as good as it tasted.
We also enjoyed the additional penguin shaped cakes, because the chocolate flavors are rich and smooth.
We also loved the themed tea set, which you get to take home. We just had to buy the Suica Penguin pajamas the moment we saw them. No regrets there!
Check-In and Check-Out
At check-in, the front desk staff gives you two vouchers. One is for your penguin mousse cakes, which you can pick up downstairs. The other is for breakfast, and you’ll choose your delivery time with the room service team. If you want the Suica loungewear, just let them know, they’ll add it to your stay at the discounted rate.
Check-out is quick and easy. Standard time is 12 PM. You can return your key at the front desk or drop it in the key box near the first-floor elevator.
Room Service and Breakfast Experience
Breakfast is delivered right to your room, and it’s a full spread. Suica-themed pancakes, eggs, salad, juice, coffee, yogurt, fruit. Everything arrives on time, and the staff comes back later to clear it so you don’t have to deal with cleanup. It’s the kind of calm, slow morning that makes you want to stay an extra day.

Our Honest Review on the Suica Penguin Hotel Room
Is the Suica Penguin Room worth it? If you love unique hotel experiences or just love penguins, then absolutely yes. It’s one of the most fun and thoughtful stays we’ve had.
The room isn’t huge, but it’s comfortable. The themed details go beyond décor, and everything, from the guest diaries to the mousse cakes, feels personal.
It’s a great pick for couples, solo travelers, or anyone who wants to experience a side of Japan that’s cute but still well-designed.
Would we stay again? Probably not, simply because we’ve already had our moment. It’s also not the best fit if you’re trying to pack your Tokyo itinerary to the max. The one-night policy means you’ll have to switch hotels, which adds an extra layer of logistics.
The price has also gone up since our stay. It’s definitely more expensive compared to the standard rooms in the same hotel.
That said, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we’d 100% recommend it to friends visiting Tokyo who want something memorable without going full theme-park energy.
Conclusion
The Suica Penguin Room at Hotel Metropolitan Ikebukuro is a hidden gem for travelers who love penguins or just have a soft spot for the Suica mascot. It’s playful without being over the top, thoughtful in all the right ways, and one of those rare hotel stays that actually lives up to the hype.
If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo and want something different, this room is a fun splurge. Book early, pack light, and whatever you do, don’t skip that breakfast. It’s worth it.
